Stephen King– The Man and His Novels

Since the publication of his first novel, Stephen King has stretched the boundaries of the written word, not only bringing horror to new heights, but trying his hand at nearly every possible genre, including children's books, graphic novels, serial novels, literary fiction, nonfiction, westerns, and fantasy. Stephen King is best known as the “Horror King”.

I am a big fan of Stephen King and set out to find a little background information on this versatile writer whose literary style has taken me from “devastating fear” to “sobbing with joy”. Here is a short Stephen King biography.

THE MAN:

• Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947. Stephen is of Scots-Irish ancestry, stands 6'4" and weighs about 200 pounds. He is blue-eyed, fair-skinned, and has thick, black hair
• Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and then Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level
• He and Tabitha Spruce married in January of 1971. The Kings have three children: Naomi Rachel, Joe Hill and Owen Phillip, and three grandchildren.
• In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching high school English classes at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.
• In the spring of 1973, Doubleday & Co. accepted the novel Carrie for publication. Carrie was published in the spring of 1974, and the theatrical release of Carrie was in 1976.
• Stephen is the 2003 recipient of The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

HIS NOVELS:

Since the release of Carrie, Stephen King has published over 62 novels and short story collections. He has also published books under the name of Richard Bachman. There are 7 novels published under this name.
